This Open Continuous Announcement (OCA) accepts applications throughout the year with eligible candidates being placed on the register and referred for consideration when vacancies occur.

The position performs the primary function of a Registered Nurse with the Emergency Room/Urgent Care Department by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of all assigned patients with medical, surgical, pediatrics, ambulatory or emergency conditions. The position reports to the Supervisory Clinical Nurse.
The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. Responsibilities
Assess patient care needs on the unit and adjusts personnel assignments appropriately, after consulting with the Emergency Room/Urgent Care Department Charge Nurse or Supervisor; assess the delivery of nursing care in the Emergency Room/Urgent Care Department and identifies problems and opportunities for improvement.
Initiates treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures based on appropriate utilization of standing orders and Emergency Room/Urgent Care Department protocols; operates specialized equipment.
Administers therapeutic and emergency measures as prescribed by the physician or mid-level provider, such as medications, treatments, procedures, and intravenous fluids, while adhering to current scientific knowledge, principles of safety and infection control.
Assists in the review and revision of nursing policies and procedures, as directed by the Emergency Room/Urgent Care Supervisor
Consults with providers and other health care professionals to coordinate diagnostic and therapeutic regimens for patients; implements nursing interventions based in accordance with patient care standards.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Education
A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Licensure
For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Experience
The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.
In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have had at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector.
Specialized Experience: Providing nursing care, triaging patients, recognizing and intervening in acute life-threatening situations, cardiac and respiratory failure management in emergency room; interpreting data about the patient's status in order to identify the patient care needed; skilled in operating specialized equipment; independently planning, scheduling and providing comprehensive nursing care in the Emergency Department/Urgent Care.
Public Health Service (PHS) Licensure Policy: Each PHS Nurse must possess and maintain a valid, active, current licensure/registration as a professional nurse.
Education
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
