Summary
Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.
About the Position:
Located in the scenic Hudson River valley, only 50 miles from New York City, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is a four-year academic institution, a nationally renowned historic site, and the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. The undergraduates, known as cadets, are commissioned as officers in the US Army upon graduation. You can watch them on parade or competing as intercollegiate athletes in a wide range of sports events. As a military installation, West Point is a small, self-contained city with housing for the military stationed here in support of the Academy, a Department of Public Works to maintain the roads, grounds and facilities, two libraries (Academic and Community), a military hospital, fire department, chapels, restaurants. West Point's 3,000 civilian employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theatre, the Hudson Valley's premiere performing arts center, and to recreational facilities such as an 18-hole Golf Course and Ski Slope.
This is an open continuous announcement that is open for a year with an initial cutoff date of one week, and then will use any applicants received after that date based on a monthly cut-off to obtain a certificate when qualified applicants are available.

Responsibilities
As a Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard) trainee GS-04 for the Fitness Center at West Point you will receive assignments of increasing complexity and independence. At the full performance level of GS-05 you will perform the following duties:
- Manage the daily operations of the Fitness Center at the US Military Academy, conducting various programs designed to meet the fitness needs and interests of the West Point Community.
- Coordinate and conduct aerobic and strength conditioning programs and exercises within the confines of established policy and objectives.
- Conduct classes, demonstrations, training and special events for the fitness facility.
- Conduct daily (4 times per day) inspections of the fitness facility and periodic inspections of other Department of Physical Education fitness facilities to identify sanitation or maintenance problems.
- Make minor repairs and clean facilities as required.
- Check ID cards, file records, update bulletin boards, monitor training schedules, and ensure security of the Fitness Center at all times.
- Perform lifeguard duties, including rescues and first aid, at indoor swimming pool. You must be able to obtain and maintain lifeguard certification.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-04 Level: General AND Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience (1) in any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with recreational programs/activities, lifeguard, etc., AND six months of specialized experience which includes: (1) Experience preparing and leading activities in a recreational setting, such as a school, community center, or other type of public or private recreation program; (2) Basic facility maintenance; and (3) Basic computer skills. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).
GS-05 Level - Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Experience demonstrating and training persons on a variety of aerobic and strength conditioning equipment; (2) Experience maintaining a variety of aerobic and strength conditioning equipment; (3) Experience ensuring security of building and patrons, such as in fitness centers and swimming pool recreational areas; and (4) Experience using various office automation tools and equipment.. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

GS-04 Level - Substitution of Education:
Education: Successful completion of two years of education above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g. basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.).
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
GS-05 Level - Substitution of Education:
Education: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages
