Summary
This announcement will remain open until December 31, 2018 or until the position is filled. Complete applications received by Friday, April 13, 2018 will be given first consideration. After that, if the position remains unfilled, complete applications received by every other subsequent Friday will be considered.
This is a Fee Basis Position.
Pay will be determined per procedure based on CPT Codes. Fee rates range from $30.00 to $85.00 per service.
The Orlando VA Medical Center at Orlando, FL is looking for an Audiologist who is licensed to work in the Audiology Service as a fee basis employee. The schedule is day shift, Monday to Friday with possible weekend coverage options, and is based on the needs of the service. The Audiologist functions independently and without direct supervision, while responsible for the performance of all General Audiology examinations. These exams will provide the proper diagnosis and the proper treatment may be obtained. Fee Basis Audiologists are not entitled to any benefits that the permanent employees receive, including health, life, pension, or leave. Applicant will be paid by procedure.
Work Schedule: Fee Basis employees have no regularly-scheduled work hours. The need for the Fee Basis Audiologist cannot be predicted. The Fee Basis Audiologist will be contacted to work as needed.

Responsibilities
The incumbent will perform duties of a staff Audiologist at the Lake Baldwin Outpatient Clinic, Lake Nona Hospital, and the Viera Outpatient Clinic. Applicant will be paid by procedure which may consist of any or all of the following; but not limited to the following:
Hearing exam (including selection if done as part of the exam)
Hearing Aid Fitting: audiologist only
Hearing Aid Fitting: Audiologist/tech for 30/30 visit
Hearing aid service (includes HA selection if done alone, without exam)
ABR Exam
C&P Visit as part of C&P clinic
Cerumen removal (alone or in conjunction with additional services, not for lighted curette)
Administration Time (upon request for certain clinic needs/identified training outside normal expectations, 15 IOIHAs, 7 HA box, or equivalent workload
C&P Addendum/Opinion (upon request, when not due to error)

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.
Education: Master's degree or its equivalent in audiology or hearing science from an accredited college or university is required. NOTE: [Effective] January 1, 2007, the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of ASHA [accredit] only doctoral degree programs in audiology or hearing science.
Licensure: The audiologist must maintain full, current, and unrestricted licensure/registration. Licensure: For those grades that require licensure (GS-12 and above), the incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. NOTE: All audiologists who perform compensation and pension (C&P) examinations are considered to be performing direct patient care duties, and must possess a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice audiology (38 CFR 4.85). Loss of Credential: An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain licensure/certification/ registration within the required time frame, or who fails to maintain the required licensure/certification/registration must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment.
English Language Proficiency: Audiologists must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Physical Requirements: Candidates selected for employment will be required to pass a physical examination

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Creditable Experience:
Knowledge of Contemporary Professional Audiology Practice. To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with contemporary professional audiology practice. This knowledge may be evidenced by one or more of the following:At least 1 year of active professional practice or its equivalent. Active professional practice means paid or non-paid employment as a professional audiologist engaged in the practice of audiology as defined by the appropriate licensing board.
Academic course work leading to a doctoral degree in audiology or hearing science.
Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it is both of the following:
Work as a professional audiologist directly related to the position to be filled; and
At a level comparable to audiology experience at the next lower grade level.
Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a professional audiologist is credited according to its relationship to the full-time work week. For example, an audiologist would receive 1 week of full-time credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work.
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining grades.
Grade Requirement for the GS-9:
Education and Experience. None beyond the basic requirements.
Assignment. Employees at this level serve in A/S-LP career development positions.
Grade Requirement for the GS-11:
Education and Experience. Completion of 1 year of professional experience as an audiologist equivalent to the next lower level; or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a doctoral degree; or a doctoral degree in audiology or speech-language pathology, communication sciences and disorders, or a related field. For positions involved in research A/S-LP assignments involving no direct patient care, no additional education or professional experience is required beyond those identified at the GS-9 level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the [knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) identified for the assignment.
Assignments. Audiologist at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments:Staff Audiologist/Speech Language Pathologist. Staff A/S-LPs at this grade level perform clinical assessment and treatment intervention. If unlicensed in either field, the individual must function under the supervision of a licensed A/S-LP, audiologist, or speech-language pathologist. If licensed in one field only, the A/S-LP must be supervised by a licensed A/S-LP or licensed audiologist or speech-language pathologist depending on the unlicensed specialty.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities:
Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice;
Ability to communicate orally and in writing;
Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, acoustics, applied acoustics, communication, psychoacoustics, and auditory/vestibular pathophysiology;
Knowledge of principles and techniques in the assessment and treatment of auditory and balance disorders;
Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice; and
Ability to interact with patients, families, and other health care professionals.
Grade Requirement for the GS-12:
Licensure. The incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
Education and Experience. In addition to the requirements at the GS-11 level, completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level and possession of a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology. For positions involved in research audiology assignments involving no direct patient care, completion of a doctoral degree in audiology, hearing science, or a related field is fully qualifying.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities:
Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies;
Knowledge of clinical services, and the ability to perform them independently;
Ability to conduct assessments and provide treatment interventions;
Ability to provide consultation to other care professionals;
Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice; and
Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice.
Preferred Experience: Au.D or Ph.D
