Summary
DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.205) for this occupation.
**This announcement establishes an open continuous announcement of eligible applicants to be considered for this position. This announcement will close once the position has been filled. Responsibilities
The Gastroenterology (GI) Technician serves as part of the medical/surgical team that uses endoscopes to diagnose or treat gastrointestinal problems. They interact with patients and families, prepare the room and the equipment and provide support to physicians and endoscopy nurses during the procedure. These technicians set up and ensure that all equipment for all GI procedures are functional prior to each procedure. The primary role of the GI technician is to assist physicians and nurses in pre-op, intra procedure and post procedures. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Sets up and ensures that all equipment for the GI procedures are functional prior to each use.
Following any GI procedure, inputs information into the computer and relay information to the registered nurse, gastroenterologist, and the rest of the staff.
Assembles a variety of complex equipment such as scopes an other air powered equipment.
Assists the gastroenterologist with all GI procedures.
Selects the correct instruments for a procedure and anticipates the needs of the gastroenterologist during the procedure.
Performs procedures such as suctioning, holding biopsy forceps, guide wires, stents, and other implants inserted into the endoscope.
Responsible for high-level disinfection of equipment and supplied used during endoscopic procedures.
Handles and prepares specimens correctly, identifies them properly for policy, taking necessary precautions to avoid contaminating the specimens.
**The Incumbent may be required to float to the Broward CBOC clinic - GI department.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, off tours: at times it may be required to stay past assigned tour of duty, and on call (rotations among other staff) Options: daily at 3:30 pm -7:00 am, or weekends 24hrs around the clock.

Physical Requirements: Duties require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing (may excess 2 1/2 hrs. or more in emergency situations) while dressing in warm, confining and uncomfortable gown, or aprons. Considerable manual dexterity is required while passing instruments and gastroenterology material, and assembling delicate equipment. Employee will utilize good body mechanics.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes:
Knowledge of Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
GI scoping and reusable medical equipment.
Knowledge of Anesthesia.
Knowledge of the principles of asepsis and sterilization technique.
Knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology.
Ability to access appropriate operating procedures.
NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. (Transcripts Required)
