Duties
Summary
The Physician Assistant (Orthopedic) will assist the Orthopedic Surgeons with surgery cases in the operating room. Individual will also be responsible to review and ensure completion of inpatient discharge summaries for Orthopedic Surgery Service, adding addendums on discharge summaries that are deficient in meeting the current requirements including medication reconciliation. Makes daily rounds and facilitates patient care and discharge planning. Incumbent will also work in the orthopedics outpatient clinic, assisting the specialist with new consult evaluations, injections and post-op exams by running and independent clinic.
Basic Requirements:United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education. Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations AND a bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. PAs on VA rolls prior to the implementation date of this standard (i.e. September 5, 2014) who do not meet the minimum academic level of a Bachelor's degree are exempted from this requirement.
Certification. Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. PAs on VA rolls prior to March 12, 1993 who are not NCCPA certified remain exempt from the NCCPA certification requirement. However, a PA who subsequently became or becomes certified is no longer exempt and must maintain certification as a condition of employment.
English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
Responsibilities
Duties will include but not limited too:
Consistently demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill multi-symptomatic patients in both the inpatient and outpatient areas.
Appropriately documents own interventions and reviews appropriate health team documentation of patient treatment plans and involve the primary care provider when indicated to treat changes in the patient's condition.
Recognizes complex situations that impact patient care and intervenes, using sound judgment, professional attitude and appropriate channels.
Elicits a detailed and accurate history, performs appropriate physical examination, identifies problems, records pertinent data, and charts appropriately when seeing clinic patients.
Performs therapeutic procedures including cast application, bracing techniques, and therapeutic injections
Prescribes appropriately within established PA-C parameters.
Instructs and counsels patients regarding therapy.
Assists physician in inpatient setting when requested by conducting patient rounds, recording patient progress notes, determining and implementing therapeutic plans jointly with supervising physician.
Assists with operative procedures as the first assistant when requested.
Instructs residents and medical students in casting and bracing techniques.
Maintains sufficient inventory of supplies and appliances to meet the needs of the section, and initiates the purchase of the supplies through appropriate methods.
Take responsibility for the care and storage of the equipment used by the section.
Prepares for and opens clinic if requested.
Obtains x-rays, CDs and coordinates patient visits for his/her clinics.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, unless otherwise approved by supervisor. Call may be required.
