Summary
This position is located in the Office of Research & Engineering, Vehicle Recorder Division. The incumbent serves as a member of a team responsible for complex data recovery and analysis of recorded data recovered from aviation and surface vehicles and other electronic devices.

Responsibilities
IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT: The ideal candidate is an aerospace, electrical, or mechanical engineer interested in improving safety of the traveling public in a meaningful way through the challenges of working in a laboratory extracting data from a variety of vehicle recorders and other devices, documenting the results, and occasionally launching to accident sites to handle critical on-scene recorder recoveries.
At the GS-13, in addition to duties at the lower grade level, typical duties may include:
-- Provides engineering advice on vehicle recorders in one or more modes of transportation.
-- Serves as Group Chairperson of a team of experts conducting vehicle recorder investigations.
At the GS-12, in addition to duties at the lower grade level, typical duties may include:
-- Assures technical quality and capability of the Division's laboratories and related systems.
-- Operates and assists with the Division's laboratories and develops new methods and technologies.
At the GS-11, typical duties may include:
-- Recovers recorded information and prepares reports to achieve maximum use of information for accident prevention and to achieve Safety Board objectives.

Qualifications
DEGREE: Bachelor's or higher degree in ENGINEERING. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science and physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

a combination of education and experience which includes successful completion of one of the following as defined by the Office of Personnel Management: Professional Registration, Written Test, Specified academic courses or Related curriculum. In addition to the education requirement, experience as follows is required.
GS-13: To minimally qualify for the GS-13 level, the applicant must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level. Specialized experience demonstrates mastery of engineering theories and methods sufficient to develop new procedures to address novel/complex investigation scenarios; ability to apply industry-accepted principles, techniques and practices of engineering to conduct complex analyses of recorded data, audio, or video; and ability to resolve technical challenges in extraction of recorded data, audio or video when standard methods are not successful or available.
GS-12: To minimally qualify for the GS-12 level, the applicant must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level. Specialized experience demonstrates ability to apply industry-accepted principles, techniques and practices of engineering to conduct complex analyses of recorded data, audio, or video; and ability to resolve technical challenges in extraction of recorded data, audio or video when standard methods are not successful.
GS-11: To minimally qualify for the GS-11 level, the applicant must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level. Specialized experience demonstrates ability to apply industry-accepted principles, techniques and practices of engineering to conduct analyses of recorded data, audio, or video; and ability to extract recorded data, audio or video using standard methods;
OR
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph. D. or equivalent doctoral degree. To be creditable, your education must be directly related to the position being filled.

-- Knowledge of aircraft or surface vehicle operations or systems (such as controls, navigation, engines, etc.) in a civilian or military environment.
