Responsibilities
We are seeking an ABIM board certified or eligible Pulmonary and critical care specialist to serve as a full-time position section chief of the Pulmonary, critical care, and Respiratory Therapy program within Internal Medicine Specialty Service at the Salisbury Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SVAMC) in Salisbury, NC. Primary duties include oversight of operations at the main campus at the Salisbury Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SVAMC), and at the healthcare Centers (HCC) in Charlotte and Kernersville. The section chief will be responsible for day to day operations at all three sites with the assistance of program managers who provide first line supervision at the satellite locations. The section chief will also be responsible for oversight of fellow and other trainee education during Pulmonary and critical care rotations and ensure participation in the thoracic oncology tumor boards. Duties include provision of pulmonary care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Occasionally, outpatient clinic responsibilities may be conducted at an off-site multispecialty clinic located in Charlotte, NC. The Pulmonary and critical care specialist is required to see inpatient consults and provide ICU/critical care coverage in Salisbury, NC. The position requires that the Pulmonary and critical care specialist share first on-call coverage during evenings, nights and weekend hours and on holidays on a rotating basis (distributed across 5 FTE).
Expertise in general pulmonary, critical care, elective and emergent bronchoscopy procedures is essential. Advanced bronchoscopy (EBUS, navigational bronchoscopy) or sleep medicine is desired but not essential. Academic interest in teaching fellows, residents, medical students and physician assistant students is essential as the Salisbury VAMC is a training site for Pulmonary and critical care fellows. Candidates should have an active interest in clinical research and be willing to participate regularly in the CME program organized by the Medicine Service. Academic affiliation is available with Edwards Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and Wake Forest School of Medicine. Academic appointment with Edwards Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and Wake Forest School of Medicine will be required.
General Chief duties:
Oversee and manage operations of Salisbury VA HCS Pulmonary and critical care Section consisting of 6-MD FTE, 2-PA, and 29 FTE within RT program. The Section provides outpatient pulmonary care with full PFT lab and bronchoscopy capabilities at the two-free standing Health Care Centers located in Charlotte and Kernersville, NC. The inpatient service provides pulmonary consult and ICU support with 24/7 call coverage. The outpatient services provide 5-day clinics/week at all 3 sites- Salisbury, Charlotte and Kernersville, NC.
Attending responsibilities for all services - outpatient, inpatient and ICU (At least 60% clinical effort).
Teaching and mentoring fellows, residents, medical students and PA students.
Academic affiliation is available with Edwards Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and Wake Forest School of Medicine.
Building a research program.
Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Monday-Friday)

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Board Certification in Internal Medicine, completion, or participation in the ABIM MOC for Hospitalist Medicine is desirable.
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
