Duties
Summary
Performs Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) and radiographic examinations of the head, neck spine, chest, body and extremities. These exams are performed with and without use of contrast materials. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies so that proper diagnosis and treatment may be effectuated.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Confers with radiologists to determine requirements of non-standard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness of scans, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of MRI scanning. Advises radiologists of examination results. Notifies them of scans requiring their immediate attention.
Works with the radiologist as a member of the radiographic team. Must assist and anticipate the needs of the radiologists and performance of the exam. Must be continuously on alert for the patient's condition. The alertness of the individual is essential to prevent contamination, recognize patient reactions, anticipate technique factor difficulties, etc.
Performs technical work in support of routine, diagnostic radiology under the direction of a physician. Operates radiology equipment as part of the diagnostic plan for patients. Determines technical factors (i.e., calculates the correct exposure factors of time, distance, kilovoltage, and milliamperage), sets controls and operates equipment ensuring that the portion of the body specified receives the correct calculated exposure. Selects and sets technical factors for very difficult radiographic examinations.
Prepares and administers contrast materials that are used in MRI exams. Improper use or administration of the contrast materials run the risk of patient mortality and, therefore, it is essential that a thorough understanding of the contrast material usage is possessed by those who prepares and administers it. In addition, must be continuously on the alert to the patient's condition and other disorders. Reactions on the part of the patient require immediate attention so that harm does not come to the patient. The incumbent is certified to insert IV needles for administration of contrast material when necessary.
Work Schedule: 12:30 PM to 9:00 PM Tues-Fri; 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM Saturdays

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification. Must be certified in general radiology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology ARRT (R) (MR).
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in both written and spoken English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402 (d), and 7407 (d).
Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in Radiology.
Grade Determinations: Must have completed 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled and fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level (GS-8).As outline in the VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G25.
General Radiologic Technology (R). Diagnostic Radiologic technologists perform procedures and examinations in hospitals or clinics under the direction of radiologists and other medical officers. The objective of the examinations and procedures is to produce radiographic studies that are used in medical diagnosis and interpreted by medical officers to locate injuries, foreign bodies, pathological conditions, or lesions within the body. They prepare and administer contrast media and medications in accordance with State and Federal regulations. All diagnostic Radiologic technologists must be knowledgeable in Computerized Radiography (CR) and Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS).
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR). This specialty modality requires additional knowledge of super conducting magnets, the physics of superconducting magnets, and how they relate to the human anatomy in medical imaging. The technologist must be educated in the safety factors governing a magnetic environment that patients, visitors, and equipment enter into. The technologist must have specific specialized knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and how it relates to the soft tissues and vessels of the human body. The technologist must also have specialized knowledge in the radio-frequency surface coils required for each specific anatomical area to be imaged. The technologist requires knowledge of image acquisition in Computerized Radiography (CR) and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS).
In addition, you must demonstrate in your resume that you possess the following technical KSAs
*a. Thorough knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques including concepts of accumulated dosage and genetic changes;
*b. Skill to recognize changes in equipment and procedures that might result in increased exposures, and ability to recommend methods to prevent such exposures;
*c. Knowledge of basic physics including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields, and properties of x-ray, in order to understand the operation of the equipment;
d. Knowledge and skill in positioning of patients for a wide variety of difficult radiographic ( MRI, Special Procedures, Mammography, etc.) studies.
